Thank the Ones Who Came Before Us

Most of us don’t stop to think about the people who made it possible for us to exist in the first place. It's easy to get so wrapped up in our daily lives that we forget the long line of folks who dealt with their own lives, ups and downs, and somehow led to us being here. You can think of this as pausing to just mentally nod at those who paved the way, even if you never met them. It doesn’t need to be spiritual or overly serious – more like a casual tip of the hat to those who came before.

Think about it: every grandparent, great-grandparent, and way-back ancestors had their own stuff going on. They went through wars, raised kids, tried new things, messed up, started over, and just kept going. And because of all that, you’re here today. Let’s give a small nod to that.

  • The small habits they passed down: Little things like a recipe, a quirky phrase, or a family habit. Maybe you still cook a meal that your grandma made, or use a trick your mom taught you. These small things are part of your routine, but they’ve been passed along for a reason.
  • Traditions that linger in your life: These don’t have to be big, formal traditions. Think about the little ways your family does things – the way birthdays are celebrated, family gatherings and holidays. These bits of the past are carried forward every time they’re repeated.
  • Looks, traits, and even quirks: From your uncle's sense of humor to the way your dad laughs, so many of your physical and personality traits are threads connecting you to a whole line of people before you. It's like each person left a little mark, and now here you are with a unique combo of traits.

Giving a Nod to the God Inside You

When we talk about the “god within,” we're being spiritual rather than being religiou. We're tyring to recognize that there’s something unexplainable but powerful inside each of us. You could think of it as intuition, your inner voice, or just your own self, it's that little spark that keeps you going.

It’s easy to ignore that part of yourself because life really is busy, right? But when you take a second to acknowledge that part of yourself, it’s like giving yourself a mental high-five.

This inner “god” is like your personal guiding force. Sometimes, it’s the little nudge that tells you to go for something new, take a break, or try a different approach. Listening to this voice doesn’t require a ritual – just a little awareness.

  • Listening to your gut: You’ve probably had moments when you just knew what felt right or wrong, even if it didn’t make sense logically. Trusting that inner voice is part of acknowledging the god within.
  • Finding your own vibe: Everyone has a natural rhythm for things. Some people are night owls, some are early risers. Noticing how and when you feel the most “you” is another way of connecting with that inner spark.
  • Taking small moments to breathe: Just a few seconds to pause and breathe can feel like resetting yourself. It’s a tiny way to recognize that there’s something inside you worth paying attention to.

Small Ways to Show Appreciation Every Day

Showing appreciation doesn’t need to involve big gestures or ceremonies. It’s more like incorporating small, everyday habits that remind you of where you come from and the spark inside you. Simple acknowledgments can actually shift how you feel in a day – it’s subtle, but it adds up.

You don’t need to put on a grand event or go through a formal process. Instead, focus on quick moments that don’t disrupt your routine. These little habits make it easier to appreciate things without getting too wrapped up in it.

  • A quiet moment in the morning: Before you get moving, take a second to think of your ancestors and that inner spark. No need for a full meditation – just a quick thought.
  • Setting an intention for the day: Maybe you decide to bring a little of your grandma’s patience or your grandpa’s humor into your interactions. It’s like carrying a piece of them with you.
  • Ending the day with gratitude: At night, give a small nod to yourself for getting through the day. It's a way of saying “thank you” to both your ancestors and that spark inside.

Letting Go of Expectations and Just Going with the Flow

We all get so caught up in our own expectations, which can make life feel like a to-do list instead of something more enjoyable. Letting go of some of that can help you feel lighter and more in tune with that inner spark. This doesn’t mean you should throw all plans out the window but learning to ease up now and then can make a real difference.

When you let go a little, you’re often more open to new experiences and small surprises. You don’t need to have a “reason” or a “goal” in mind – sometimes, it’s just about seeing what happens.

  • Taking spontaneous breaks: Sometimes, the best ideas or most fun times come when you weren’t planning for them. Letting yourself take a random break or say yes to something last-minute can make life feel more alive.
  • Doing something just because: Try out a new hobby or activity that has no purpose other than you’re curious. It’s a way of honoring that inner spark without pressure.
  • Being okay with small mess-ups: Not everything has to be perfect. Allowing yourself to make a small mistake here and there without stress can feel freeing.

Treating Yourself with the Same Respect You’d Give a Friend

If you’re quick to give friends the benefit of the doubt but hard on yourself, you’re definitely not alone. Imagine treating yourself like you would a friend who has your best interests at heart. That little voice inside – the one that cheers you on or calms you down – deserves that same respect.

When you treat yourself with that level of kindness, it’s like nurturing that god within. You’re giving it room to breathe and grow, which often brings more self-assurance into your life.

  • Talking to yourself with kindness: Instead of criticizing yourself, try speaking to yourself like you would to a close friend who’s trying their best. It shifts your whole attitude.
  • Letting yourself rest: Just like you wouldn’t push a friend to the point of exhaustion, don’t push yourself too hard. Small breaks and rest time are ways of showing that inner respect.
  • Giving yourself credit: When you accomplish something, even a small thing, give yourself a mental high-five. It’s a way of affirming the spark inside you.

Keeping Your Own Style While Honoring Where You Came From

There’s a balance between honoring those who came before you and creating your own path. You’ve probably inherited a few family traits or habits, and that’s great. But it’s also important to make room for your own way of doing things. This balance of old and new creates a blend of who you are, rooted in the past but shaped by your choices.

You’re like a unique mix of inherited pieces and personal preferences. It’s worth taking a moment to think about what you want to carry forward and what you’d like to create for yourself.

  • Doing things your way: If you have a different style than your family, go with it. You’re still honoring them, but you’re also being true to yourself.
  • Keeping some traditions and letting go of others: Some traditions feel meaningful, while others might not. It’s okay to choose what fits and leave the rest.
  • Blending family habits with your own quirks: Maybe your family is super into cooking, but you like to experiment with recipes. You’re keeping the essence of the tradition but adding your twist.

Practicing These Ideas Without Getting Overwhelmed

The last thing you need is to feel overwhelmed by “one more thing to do.” This whole approach is meant to feel light and easy, without pressure. Appreciating your roots and inner self doesn’t need to become another task on the list. It’s more of a natural flow, just small moments to keep in mind, nothing forced.

If you can keep it simple, this mindset will fit into your day instead of feeling like an obligation. After all, it’s about making life a little richer without extra work.

  • Keeping it low-key: A quick thought or smile in the morning or at night is all it takes. No need for a big process.
  • Finding small reminders: A photo, a favorite quote, or a quick note can remind you of these ideas without getting intense about it.
  • Staying flexible: Some days, you might feel this more strongly, and other days, not at all. That’s fine; it’s meant to be flexible.

  1. Thank you for the great article. To me it's very important to worship my ancestors as I truly believe that they continuously create our future. By the way, I keep getting advertisements about ADHD. Why is this, can you tell me more about the connection.
Thank you and keep the good work coming.
