It’s extremely hard to find unique umbrellas for men – do they have to be all black!? Today I would like to show you some affordable mens umbrellas, folding ones as well as full-length ones that I think are unique enough.
If you search the words “why umbrellas are in black” – you’ll only find a few speculations; The colour black absorbs radiations (light & heat) – so why are there so many multi-coloured ladies umbrellas exist? Some say it doesn’t show dirt on black. Another says it DOES show dirt more, so that you can easily observe the cleanliness and wash it off. (I wish Yahoo Answers were a bit more credible sometimes… “My dog is peeing a lot lately, what can be wrong with him?” Answer: “Take him to the vets.”)
Umbrella Trends
When you think about fridge/freezers – broadly there is a choice of 3 colours; white, silver or black (apart from some fantastic brands such as Smeg who have all sorts of metallic colour variety, Union Flag or cow/zebra prints) But I remember it was late 1990’s when I was looking for a new fridge/freezer. You could only find one or two silver fridges in electrical superstores back then, all others were white. I wanted a frost-free type and searched everywhere, online and high-street shops, but just couldn’t find a frost-free, non-white freezer. Other kitchen appliances were predominantly in white plastic and all the desktop PCs were in white/beige in those days too.
So I can only imagine that we’re not quite ready to have men’s umbrellas in various colours as a new trend yet. Don’t get me wrong, I’m referring to decent, proper, “manly” umbrellas. There are a lot of coloured umbrellas available, but they’re normally ladies’ or crazy rainbow, or gigantic golf parasol.
Do you have to tell me it’s “unisex”?
I personally don’t comprehend the unisex concept especially with umbrellas – manufacturers never explain why it’s unisex. If the look is suitable for men and women, we all know it’s unisex! But I guess they produce a blue folding umbrella that could look feminine, but if they call it “unisex”, boys will simply buy it. (Man-bag essential?)
Umbrella History
The history of the umbrella goes back to ancient China, thousands of years ago. But it was introduced to Britain in 18th Century. It was much heavier, made with ribs of whalebone or split cane, until steel ribbed umbrella was invented in mid-19th Century. The word “umbrella” comes from the Latin word “umbros” meaning shades, or shadow, much more in relation to parasol then.
Do We Need An Umbrella?
Umbrella industry has thrived because we do have a lot of wet days in Britain. But we rarely have torrential downpours lasting for a few minutes, let alone hours. With enough means of transport & shopping malls in the city, an umbrella is no longer a must-have, must-carry item. I often take my folding one with me to work just in case, and bring it back unused in the evening.
Whereas in a lot of countries when it rains, it seriously rains. In Japan, shops/restaurants have umbrella stands at the entrance, visitors must stick their wet umbrella in the stand before going in, and when they come out, they find it gone – someone else has either stolen or mistaken it. You see there’s no point in buying a nice umbrella in Japan, they get a cheap disposable one from a 100 Yen shop…..
…..OR, they’ve got this!
200 sheets of translucent disposable umbrella bags with string (Japanese import)
Available from Amazon.co.uk >>>
I thought it would be handy if you carry a few of these bags. Just stick your wet umbrella when you get on a train, you can lean it against an empty seat or hold it in between your knees.
Actually in Japan a lot of shops have these bags at the entrance so that the visitors can carry their umbrella in it… Upon exit there is a bin for the used bag.

This article has hit the nail on the head! I absolutely agree that men need a choice of umbrella. We live out in the country so my husband arguably needs an umbrella more than those who live in a city, less places to hide.
The idea of a colourful one is really appealing and certain to make it to a Christmas list of the future.
I like the fridge analogy too.
Hi Charlotte, I’m glad you agree with me, especially about the fridge! Yes as you say great as a Christmas present. A black umbrella would be boring as a gift – unless it’s a well made, good brand – but a coloured umbrella would definitely be more appealing.
Thanks for your comments,
Ray
Hi Raymundo,
Fulton Knightsbridge City Stripe Black Look really sick for a gentleman dressing with an umbrella !
I love your website about how classy a gentleman wears their shirt and which is better
OH btw! is there such things which is a gentleman that drinks?
Or what do they usually order for their drinks
Keep up the good work!
Love your website
Cheers
Rick
Hi Rick, thanks for your comments! Yes I agree the stripey umbrella looks slick too. What do gentlemen drink…? I think it’s how they drink rather than what they drink…as long as you make sure you’re enjoying every sip! My personal favourite used to be Jameson with a splash of soda. How about Cosmopolitan? No??? Just add “Shaken, not stirred” when ordering?Ray
Hi Raymundo,
This truly is a very interesting niche. As soon as I starting reading, it hit me…Most men umbrellas are black!!I didn’t even realize it up until now.
I love the different types of umbrellas that you’ve displayed. My favorite one is definitely the one which has the undercover constellation interior. I would love to own one like that.
Thank you for the interesting article.
I’ve really enjoyed this.
Thanks for the comments, yes I do love the one with constellation too – I wouldn’t mind owning a black umbrella if the undercover design is unique like this one. Although I’ve found a lot of crazy ones too. Outside black, inside Disney character… I’d say no, but some guys might like it!
Thanks again!
Ray
I’m glad you raised a question about the colour black. I never believed that it was the reason why most umbrellas are black because they absorb more light energy either.
One thing that is very important to me is the strength of the umbrella. If it should break because of the mildest wind, then it is useless.
It should also be able to fold up to a very small size.
Thanks for your comment, yes I agree, it must be strong! I still have a cheap umbrella I bought in New York a few years ago for $5, nice and small but it got broken within 5 minutes (and it was black of course…)
Hey there
You have laid out a great article relating to different umbrella. It is quite new to people like me who doesnt really use umbrella (I find it quite girly at times)
My girlfriend uses umbrella & she mentioned that her skin needs protection from the UV ray. For me, I couldnt care about that as I feel that it actually provides me with the vitamin that i need. By the way, those are some fancy looking umbrellas you have got there!
Thanks
Zhi Wei
Hi Zhi Wei, thanks for your comment, yes I find some umbrella girly too – some have a feminine shaped handle even though it says “mens”. You’re right, some girls carry an umbrella (or parasol) all the time in the summer. Good point about getting vitamins from the Sun (but you’ll see what happens to your skin when you get to my age lol!)
Ray
Well I guess we do certainly learn something new every day! I never knew that umbrellas were actually created in China nor that you could buy umbrella bags from Amazon! I never really thought about it before but yes – I suppose that men are quite restricted when it comes to choosing an umbrella… I really like the range you have selected here and will be using it to get an umbrella for my boyfriend – he is quite fussy and likes to have an umbrella as an accessory 🙂
Hi Holly, yes I’d like to have an umbrella as an accessory too, in a sense that it’s something that I own, rather than just for the functionality. It’s been raining almost all day today in London – and I never got to use mine again because the rain magically stopped on my way to work, and stopped again on my way home. I guess how often you need it too.
Thanks for your comment.
Very interesting review and information about umbrellas. I knew that Chinese first came with this concept, but didn’t know that it took so long for it to come to west. Constellation Interior is my personal favourite from your list. There are many interesting umbrellas. Also the information about that first umbrellas were made from whalebone was quite interesting.
Thanks Tyler for your comment, yes Constellation umbrella is my favourite too. I’m still looking around for more interesting ones right now, as the weather’s been so wet over here. Hopefully I can add some more so watch this space!
I just learned and knew the distinction between folding umbrella and full-length umbrella. I googled it.
Generic aside, it’s difficult to find what’s the right answer and which one is wrong. It’s kinda confusing when you search online.
I agree personally about men buying unisex items. I do, I’ve to admit. I mean, that’s what I ask in stores if an item looks to me felt uncertain whether it’s for guys too.
Thanks for your comment, perhaps all the product manufacturers should widen the unisex criteria and see what happens; pink bags, floral smartphone cases, skirts…call them all “unisex” and men might start to buy those. Well there are men’s floral shirts and kilts!
I don’t even know if I have any more umbrellas in my house. I haven’t use an umbrella probably at least 10 years. That’s only because everybody in my family wears jackets now with hoods for the rain. Also I wouldn’t understand how an umbrella would be black to repell radiation because I’ve never actually seen anyone have an umbrella when it’s sunny outside while it’s not actually raining but I could be wrong haha.
Good stuff!
Chris
Hi Chris,
Thanks for your comments – yes repelling radiation theory is a total rubbish I think! Well it’s a parasol that used mostly by women to avoid getting tanned, but it’s never black as they tend to use it in the hot summer with glaring sunshine, and colour black absorbs heat hence you’ll be hotter standing underneath.
I’m not a fan of rain jackets unless used on a “light rain with no wind” day – I know it is handy to have a waterproof jacket though. Good for mountain walk for sure!
Ray
Interesting article to say the least. I’ve never given much thought to umbrellas, and haven’t used them all that often during my life. Very strange to think about actually, the idea of an umbrella. Lol. I usually just tough it out and run, or walk and act like it’s not raining. Lmao. You’ve almost inspired me to invest in one!!
I’m thinking back on all those times I may have looked like a doofus walking ever so slightly in the rain towards my destination. In my head I’m always like “Well if I run it’s going to look even worse, but if I walk like a boss, then everyone will just be like he’s so badass”. Who knew I could talk about rain and umbrellas like this?
Anywho, I’ve always seen them as sort of an artistic statement. Have you noticed that a lot of art involves really artsy photos of umbrellas? Let me know your thoughts on this.
-Stu
Hi Stu, thanks for your comment and sharing your experiences. I can think of some arts with umbrellas but with those gentlemen in black with a hat, holding an umbrella, the colour of which must be black again… There must be lot of women’s colourful parasols in arts though.
Which reminded me the Portuguese Umbrella Project, I’d love to go and see it in the town of Ãgueda.
Thanks again!
Hi Raymundo. Its fun reading your article. Maybe that was the reason why my husband doesn’t want to use an umbrella, lol. Those umbrellas you mentioned were all looking great. I like umbrellas that are in monotone color, like black, gray and umbrellas with chequered on them. And those you mentioned would be great for a lady like me as well, right?
Hi Kathe, thanks for your comment, I agree, I like umbrellas in monotone colour, but not just plain black… But you never know, there are a lot of men’s stuff in red, such as jackets, rucksack, even jeans, men’s red umbrella may become in fashion in the future!
I really enjoyed reading your article! I’ve thought about that myself, men do not have any variety when it comes to umbrellas!
More men should have those fantastic alternatives to just the boring black ones! I really like the constellation one – looks stylish and classy!!
Disposable umbrella bags?! I didn’t know they existed – what a fabulous invention!
Thanks Anna, disposable umbrella bags may not be such a good idea today unless they’re eco-friendly, I have found some “environmentally free” bags sold via Amazon by the way, but they don’t explain why. These Japanese ones are made of plastic, so clearly not, unfortunately.
