Am I an alcoholic? How can I stop drinking? Everything you need to know is here. Doctors & advisors suggest many ways to quit drinking but they don’t necessarily work. Frankly, I think most of them are rubbish.
Your brain functions and physical metabolism start to slow down once you pass a certain age. I believe if you want to delay the process, you should stop drinking. You shouldn’t get drunk, you shouldn’t be in a tipsy state at any time if you want to maintain good physical and mental abilities. Sadly! I strongly believe you should turn your eyes away from Bacardi Mojito or Vodka Martini is shaken not stirred for the rest of your life if you don’t want to get fat & stupid anymore.
So this is one of the reasons I wanted to write this article today because this site is about middle-aged men’s lifestyle, health and wellbeing. But can I also take this opportunity to share my own experiences in this space;
I Am An Alcoholic
I’m a recovering alcoholic, have abused myself with alcohol for 25+ years. Alcohol has damaged my brain cells permanently and changed my personality. I used to be loud, quick and funny, but now I’m completely opposite. I can’t talk fast and it takes me time to digest what I’ve heard or read.
I attended Alcoholic Anonymous in 2000, successfully stopped drinking completely, started drinking again 2007 after I met my husband – living together under the same roof I thought I could control the amount somehow. How wrong was I… I just poured myself some more while he wasn’t looking. Now I’ve been sober for the last 4-5 years, and intend to remain sober for the rest of my life.
The pointlessness of “Do You Drink Too Much?” Tests
There are many instant self-assessment tests available online such as;
How often do you drink more than X units of alcohol in one day?
- Have you ever been responsible for accidents while drinking?
- Has any of your friends or family expressed concern about your drinking habits in the last X years?
- Do you ever feel guilty after you’ve been drinking?
- Have you ever experienced ‘blackouts’ after drinking?
The result of which will tell you whether you are “safe or not safe”. In my opinion these tests are only as effective as “today’s lucky colour” or computer-generated Tarot cards reading. They only reaffirm what you already know.
Definition of Alcoholism
Not everyone will agree with me, but I believe whether you are an alcoholic or not is determined by your addictive personality level. It’s not a personality in your heart, it’s a personality in your brain. As far as I’m concerned, if you drink every day, you are an alcoholic.
The ONLY test to confirm is; can you cut down the frequency of alcohol consumption?
Will you be able to drink only once a week, at least for the next 12 weeks? Or even twice a week – Tuesday nights and Saturday nights only. For the next 12 weeks, starting today. If you can give it a try and get through this, you are not an alcoholic. But you are if you can’t.
My Brain Was Soaked In Alcohol
Let me talk about my battle again – I had to drink every night. The amount of alcohol is irrelevant because of the long-term habit, with my liver weaken, it only took me two glasses of whiskey & coke to get myself drunk. My eyes were dirty, cloudy yellow showing how the liver was damaged. While my husband could enjoy the taste of good wine, I was purely drinking to get drunk.
I never had lunch because I needed to have my stomach empty for the alcohol in the evening. I became boring, making all sorts of excuses to avoid socialising after work. I would come straight home and start drinking.
Just like any other alcoholics, I’d wake up in the morning and swear never to drink, ever again. By mid-afternoon I’d be planning about what to drink – my mind was completely controlled by that toxic drug.

The 2 Ways To Quit Drinking
I’m sorry to disappoint you but based on my simple test above, the two ways to quit drinking are;
- If you are not an alcoholic – cut it down gradually.
- If you are an alcoholic – stop completely NOW.
If you are #1 above, cutting down alcohol should be easy, comparing to those who are #2. Decide to drink less frequently during the week – have some sweets instead, with a little bit of motivation. Get some exercise and determine you’ll get fit.
But if you do have an addictive personality, you can’t just cut it down. It doesn’t work – I’ve tried that many times since 1994. (I just remember it was 1994 I was sick & tired of being sick & tired for the first time of countless times to follow!) The only way, the ONLY way for alcoholics to stop drinking is to stop completely.
So if you are sick of being in this cycle, here is a method to completely forget about alcohol within 21 days, i.e. 3 weeks.
The Stop Drinking Expert Method
The Stop Drinking Expert method is created by a former problem drinker, author and broadcaster Craig Beck. Watch the 2 minute video below. If you recognise what he describes – I do, every word of it – then the method is for you.
Here are 5 reasons why you can trust the method;
- 9X More Effective Than Willpower
Significantly more effective than cold-turkey or willpower-based solutions.
- No Prescription Drugs
Prescription drugs only treat the symptoms of problem drinking and not the cause.
- Save Thousands $$$
The average Stop Drinking Expert member goes on to save over $3,000 per year.
- 100% Private & Confidential
No medical records, no absence from work, no attending embarrassing group therapy.
- Give Your Loved Ones The ‘Old You’ Back
Alcohol steals away good parents and partners. Give the people you love the ‘real you’ back.
Price Plan:
So, as explained above, which price plan you’d like to go for depends on what you want to do. If you’d like to have an occasional alcoholic beverage under your own complete control, 3 months course or 6 months course is ideal, although you have to pay for the whole term in advance ($99 / $129 respectively)
As I mentioned earlier, if you are an alcoholic, there’s no such thing as “controlling alcohol consumption”. You just have to quit for good. The recommended option is Monthly Pro because you can join for a month for $49, then if you are confident, just 1 click to cancel within the first month.

Never Again!
It’s up to you whether you want to stop drinking completely forever, or you want to take control of your alcohol consumption. I’ve chosen ‘Never Again’ because I’ve gone too far. My liver & kidneys are damaged permanently, my brain is only functioning slowly. Next time alcohol will kill me – if I start drinking again, that’s when I die. And I don’t want to die just yet.
Thanks for reading.

I think you created a great website to help people struggling to stop drinking. The idea of your website is really great and I strongly believe you will be able to help tons of people who will benefit from your bad experience. When it comes to this course that can help them get rid of this bad habit, it’s very interesting. I have a question: Have you tried Craig’s course? and if yes, what is your personal opinion about it? I think though the course is probably good, but it can help only if someone decided to stop drinking. If you are not ready to stop it in your mind no course will be helpful.
Hi Rufat,
Thanks for your comment, and your questions. No, I haven’t tried Craig’s course myself because I had already managed to stop drinking before I knew about it. I have recommended this course to many of my friends (over 30-50 of them in total?), and a few have tried it. Those who tried I know of ALL managed to stop drinking. These friends of mine all had something in common – they had stopped attending Alcoholic Anonymous because they didn’t want to share their thoughts and their private lives openly within the AA. Craig’s course worked for them because it was interactive rather than face-to-face.
I was very pleased and convinced the course would help. However this was not out of my own experience, I decided not to give as my personal opinion (“my friends said it was great, so I’m sure it’s great too”)
I guess it’s all down to your determination, and I believe it helps those who don’t know how to go about, feel intimidated to join AA, or have difficulty in attending AA physically.
I’m glad you asked me that, I was wondering if I should put such a long explanation in my post for a long time. Thanks again!
Ray
I recently quit drinking and I am an alcoholic, I agree that you need to just quit and be done with it!
Thanks Dean for your comment, good for you! It’s not easy to quit though. I’m sure you had your own episodes of battle with alcohol, stay sober!
Great advice for people who have problems with alcohol abuse, whether they are addicted to alcohol or just drink too often and/or too much. I like you advice about the gradual cutting for people who are not alcoholics. I know some alcoholics who could not just quit drinking right away because they were so addicted they needed some detox first. What do you think about that?
Hi Kristof, thanks for your comment. Your question – people who want to detoxify their body “first” while they’re still taking alcoholic substance…hoping they’ll stop drinking someday. Would you say they’re just “confused”? Do you think these people need a help? I think I do.In fact at Alcoholic Anonymous, they don’t tell you to detox your body but it’s completely opposite. Eat lots of chocolate, ice cream, smoke cigarettes if you want. Do whatever takes to take your mind off the alcohol. AA is always there when they need help!Alcoholic Anonymous site: http://www.aa.org
