Men at the age of 50. Which subject interests us more; how to look younger or how to age gracefully? You'll find plenty of tips on Google on how to look younger at 50, but if you only picked "some" of those rules to follow you could end up looking desperate.
Cosmetic and clothing advice - pluck your eyebrows, slap on some glossy moisturizer, wear a multi-colored hoodie, and Voila! C'est grotesque! Here we are again, we'd have to follow other tips to keep the physical & mental strength; regular exercise, eat more vitamin & mineral-rich food, stop smoking, and drink less. And to top it all, not to get depressed!
They say hanging out with young boys will keep you in fresh spirits... Sure, youngsters are always up for something new. But if you think you're getting on with them, they're probably paying respect to you as some old, wise person. If you think you're keeping up with them, they're probably slowing their pace down for you.

Is 50 The New 20?
On the other hand, the term "aging gracefully" can be very broad. Some say "50 Is The New 20" - I think it's such an embarrassing slogan. What did we use to call back in the 1990's, teenage girls going half naked, getting pissed, loud, and cocky? Girl Power. This is equivalent to that. 50 is never the new 20, except that the average mortality rate is slightly lower now than it used to be.
You can age gracefully by accepting all sorts of mid-life crises you encounter and going with the flow. But this is just a self-content and it could leave you as a sad grumpy old fart. Isolating yourself from not just younger generations but potentially from the entire world.
You can take the complete opposite approach and try to appear to age gracefully by trying very hard - weekly yoga, Mediterranean diet, and no more indulging e.g. booze & fags. However by doing all this...will you really "find your inner-self"? And will that reflect your social lifestyle really positively? You have to restrict yourself from something you never used to have, which means you may not become entirely happy. Essentially you could be pretending to be graceful.

Would You Challenge Monica Porter?
I love Monica Porter - she's a London-based journalist, will be 63 next month, and looks like she's in her 40's. She keeps such an amazing appearance. How she beds boys in their 20s is a wonder, and how she doesn't find love in her own age may be her own problem, but she tells her honest views on typical middle-aged men she meets. And I like defending ourselves by finding out the reasons why, and what we should do.
In her Daily Mail article last year she said;
In my view, today’s middle-aged British men are rather lost at sea. They’re not great at grooming, mistakenly taking their lead from the young. I mean, designer stubble can look sexy on a cute 26-year-old, but it makes a 62-year-old look like a disheveled pensioner.
As I am just about to say that's because (a) a cute 26-year-old would look sexy wearing a Royal Mail sack and (b) a 62-year-old man wouldn't check himself in the mirror every 1/2 hour like when he was 26... Monica goes on;
My pet hate is the man in a trainspotter-style anorak, with a pot belly boldly protruding over his trouser belt. Dear-oh-dear. You wouldn’t get blokes like that in France or Italy. Mature women nowadays are all too aware of the importance of taking care of the face, hair, and body, and of dressing well in order to hold the interest of the opposite sex. Why don’t older men think the same rules apply to them?
I think it applies to both British men and women. There are many fat & ugly women in tracksuits over here too (sorry) Women are much more self-conscious than men therefore they hide their pot belly and saggy boobs. Women possessing such liabilities instead of assets daren't ask men out. Men on the other hand can be arrogant enough to ignore their own hideous belly and try seducing someone gorgeous like Monica.
She also talks about the attitudes men under 30 have;
Used to the notion of equality between the sexes, they are more spontaneous and natural. If they think you look sexy, they tell you. If they want to have sex, they tell you. If they disagree with you, they tell you.
This is an interesting bit. Since the age of 3, we've all developed a skill to be polite, and not to blatantly disagree in order to keep happy relationships. Along the way, we've also learned the skill to provoke, be controversial, and be rude just to see the reaction. Then as we grow older and wiser, gentlemanship has become much more natural. A middle-aged person with a direct attitude is not considered pretty. But maybe Monica's telling us not to be afraid and to say what we want to say. Just be careful of the thin line between spontaneity and being a grumpy old fart.

How To Look Younger At 50 IS How To Appear To Age Gracefully
So to sum it all up. It takes much, much more energy and effort to look fabulous for 50+. You need to;
- Keep fit. Moderate exercise may not be enough to lose all your excess fat.
- Grooming is essential and you need to keep checking all over yourself as you used to when you were young - I wouldn't say every 1/2 hour, but every morning at least.
- No fag or booze, watch what you eat.
- Pretend your life is easy & fabulous.
- Don't get depressed and don't get tired!
Do you think this is something you can manage???
I’m not quit in that position of being middle aged, but you have some great tips for stay younger and looking your best. would these same tips work for some one a little younger? The world need more people like you to keep the everyday man styling and profiling. With that the gadgets are cool. it keeps us all up to date with the times. great site.
Thanks for your comments!
I would say all those “how to stay young” tips would really only be for mature men & women who want to look younger. For some (young and old), the look is really not important and, as long as you have a healthy living, job that you love and happy relationships, who cares if you look older or younger than your age?
Also there are many things that you can’t do once you’ve reached a mature age, such as clubbing all night, binge drinking or two, try different hairstyles (don’t have enough hair), skateboarding (break your knees & ankles), gaming for hours (tiredness of your eyes is beyond your imagination I tell you!)… While it may be important to stay fit, you want to enjoy all that while you can, in my opinion!
Hello, I like article. It is funny, insightful and encouraging for both sexes. I think that a word age gracefully is strange. Because as you told people at their twenties can be old compare with these over fifties,who just live lives in a best way, as they want.
I think that to put people in frames and tell them that you need to behave because your age does not let you to do what you want to do, is a complete nonsense. Of course, it is mine point of view.
To take proper care of our minds and bodies is advisable at all stages of life.
I like your advices for men, but I wonder if they do not take care of themselves, maybe they do not know how to use computer.
Anyway, I adore your sense of humor, all the best to you, happy writing, Nemira.
Hi Nemira, thanks for your comments!
I agree with you, you should be doing whatever you want to do regardless to your age, sex, profession or any sorts, and you need to care your bodies & minds whatever the age group you are in. It’s just that you can be a lot more reckless while you’re young because you have a greater ability to recover and mend your lifestyle for better.
I’ve read an article about statics on women recently; those who don’t wear makeups / or have less cosmetics take care of their body & health less as well. Sorry, I’ve had a good look but can’t find the particular article.
We can think of some reasons why middle aged men don’t look after themselves as much as middle aged women – their face doesn’t need to be freshen up throughout the day, so look at the mirror less? Haircut is shorter & easy (generally)? Can anyone think of any other?
Thanks again Nemira for stopping by,
Ray
Hi Ray, I think that these guys are bored or maybe never felt in love. An other thing: they do not know that everything could be better. They follow the same route as their fathers did. Days go and all life passes by. It is the same with women.
For men I am not so big expert, but I think that they could have some fun, relax and look for things what makes them happy. It opens people and they could be energetic, willing to take life back to their hands.
All the best, Nemira
Hi Nemira, thanks for coming back. Yes you’re right, we must remember we have to have some fun and make sure we are happy in our lives, that’s the key to stay young, for sure! And not to get too stressed by little things. What if we only had 5 more years to live?
Thanks Raymond, I did not know this song. Great reminder to cherish everything what we have and do not be afraid to try new things.
Thank you Nemira, for your great comments, I appreciate your inputs! Take care, and you’re always more than welcome!

I like what you have done here! an appeal for someone my dads age to get his act together and start looking after himself! This is a real good website you have here. You also have a variety of gym machines which I think is very cool, aimed at the 50 year old! Nice work keep it up !
Hi Naeem, thanks for your comments & compliments! I hope you’ll get your dad to read this & see what he says! He might completely disagree!
Ray
I think Monica has a valid point in that what was considered cute or sexy when you are young hardly applies when you get older. I know plenty of men and women who embrace their age and look fantastic! The key is knowing how to make it work for you. I look at someone like George Clooney who rocks that salt and pepper hair like it’s the next trend!
Great tips on staying younger! Aging happens to us all but we chose what to do with that!
Hi Heather, thanks for your great comments – the key is knowing how to make it work for you – you’re absolutely right. You need to try a little hard to be happy with your look but you need to be happy with what you do and your life too.
George Clooney’s always had a fantastic haircut – look at this one (just joking)
Thanks again for stopping by!
I am not a man but I find this very applicable to all genders. It seems everyone is afraid of aging and many products (including some cosmetics talked about on my site) are made to make people look younger and appear more radiant. The things you pointed out to keep people looking younger can really apply to anyone. Teenagers tend to look older when they smoke, are depressed, or don’t take care of themselves. Nice article.
Hi Sabrina,
Thanks for your comment – yes you’re right, I’ve had a psychologist friend whom I used to visit at his clinic and couldn’t help but noticing the teenagers suffering from depression looked much older. At any stage in life, we should always consider ourselves lucky if we are able to make sure we’re in good health physically & mentally, I think!

I was laughing, my family was looking at me strange. But I guess that’s what happens when you read something which is funny. I love your writing style.
About 50 being the new 20 is a concept to buy, I’m still trying to get use to the 40 is new 20. Already it’s moved up by 10 years.
Very insightful post.
Hi Jagi, thanks for your comment, and I’m glad I’ve shared a little happiness (I hope!) with you. You never know, in a few years time 60 may become the new 20, that would be really scary. Need an anti-wrinkle body lotion. Thanks for stopping by!
