Until I was 45, I had never washed my face with soap (or facewash, scrub or any kind). I’m not Amish. When my face is covered in engine oil…because I repair my friend’s car exhaust pipes & suspensions all the time…Not! After some outdoor activities (very rarely but occasionally), I have a shower or bath anyway, so I never really washed my face in the basin. I shampoo my hair then rinse it under the shower, so inevitably the soapy water streams down my face. That was it.
In the last few years, the skin of my face has dramatically…aged. So since about 45, I’ve been trying to use face wash products now & then – when I remember and feel like it.
L’Oreal Vitalift for Men moisturiser, has been my favourite for many years and I use it as an aftershave balm. With Vitalift, I can feel my skin lifts up. And I like its non-stickiness. But it was becoming apparent that the Vitalift wasn’t enough for my skin.
I can’t hide wrinkles, don’t particularly try to hide them either, but I realise the dry skin around my eyes make me look really worse, tired, haggard. An old man in the mirror stares at me.
One day I heard my friend’s teenage daughter rave about Nivea cream. Not the fancy range with Aloe Vera and UVA factor ++, she was referring to the original blue tub of Nivea that’s been around since I was a kid, and a small tub that’s still sold for 99 pence at a supermarket. That Nivea. She says yes, it’s great for literally from head to toe (=massages Nivea into her hair………..eww)
So I took her advice and bought a little tub of Nivea for 99p, applied it a little around my eyes, and found it really good.
PRO: I put it in the morning and it keeps moist all day. I no longer look like a haggard old fart in the afternoon.
CON: So I have a shave, have a shower then put L’Oreal Vitalift on my face. Then apply Nivea around my eyes. An extra job to do, while I’d rather not make the morning routine too complicated. Nivea itself is quite a hard substance and I don’t particularly like the smell of it, so I don’t want to put Nivea all over my face, replacing Vitalift with it. You might say, why don’t I find a better, fancy Nivea range? Yes I think I should, but I love Vitalift!
CON: Nivea can be sticky – I put it on before going to bed, look myself in the mirror in the morning… Instead of an old man, some middle-aged woman with night-cream slapped shiny cheeks now stares at me.
So L’Oreal Men Vitalift is still a winner for me – and I should wash my face properly more often.
Try it if you haven’t.
