Racer / biker jackets serve certain attitudes. They give the wearer a sense of confidence like no other. Today I'd like to show you some leather motorcycle jackets for men, from authentic brands to some affordable ones. I should say "biker style" jackets because I don't ride motorbikes myself. I asked my friend Julie who is a serious biker for some advice the other day; I'm looking for a leather motorcycle jacket, what should I look for?

J: In terms of protection, this...and that (jargons)... And not only in a jacket but pants, gloves...
R: Uh huh, uh huh...
J: And it depends what kind of bike you ride.
R: I'd love to own a Vespa.
J: Vespa is a scooter, you know that. Great for shopping and stuff. I think I know what you may be getting at. You're just looking for a biker "style" jacket and you'd like a Vespa because of... Roman Holiday?
R: Quadrophenia. Jeez, I'm not that old Julie.

History of Motorcycle Jackets

Leather motorcycle jackets have a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. They were initially designed for military pilots during World War I. The tough leather material provided protection from harsh weather and minor injuries. After the war, these jackets became popular among motorcyclists.

In the 1950s, leather jackets became a symbol of rebellion and coolness.

This style of jackets first became popular when Marlon Brando worn it in the 1953 film The Wild One, worn by James Dean, almost all the original punk rockers such as The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash... Michael Jackson wore a red version in Thriller...to name a few.

Today, leather motorcycle jackets are still popular. They have evolved in design but remain a key part of motorcycle culture.

Types of Leather Motorcycle Jackets

There are various types of leather motorcycle jackets, each with unique features and styles. Here are some of the most common types:

Classic Leather Jackets

Classic leather jackets are timeless and versatile. They typically have a simple design with minimal embellishments. These jackets can be worn both on and off the motorcycle. The classic style usually includes a zippered front, a few pockets, and a comfortable fit.

Classic leather jackets are often made from high-quality leather, making them durable and long-lasting. They are a great choice for riders who want a jacket that will never go out of style.

Cruiser Jackets

Cruiser jackets are designed specifically for long rides. They are usually heavier and offer more protection than classic leather jackets. Cruiser jackets often have extra padding on the shoulders, elbows, and back to protect the rider in case of an accident.

These jackets also feature multiple pockets for storage and often have a more relaxed fit. Cruiser jackets are perfect for riders who spend a lot of time on the road and need a jacket that offers both comfort and protection.

Racing Jackets

Racing jackets are designed for high-speed riding. They are usually tighter-fitting to reduce wind resistance and often feature bright colors or stripes for visibility. Racing jackets have extra padding and armor to protect the rider in case of a fall.

These jackets are made from lightweight, yet durable leather to allow for maximum mobility. Racing jackets are ideal for riders who participate in motorcycle racing or enjoy riding at high speeds.

Touring Jackets

Touring jackets are designed for long-distance riding. They are often made from a combination of leather and other materials to provide comfort and protection. Touring jackets typically have many pockets, ventilation options, and adjustable features to ensure a comfortable fit.

These jackets are perfect for riders who go on long trips and need a jacket that can adapt to different weather conditions and environments.

Features of Leather Motorcycle Jackets

Features of Leather Motorcycle Jackets

Leather motorcycle jackets come with a variety of features designed to enhance the riding experience. Here are some key features to look for:

Protection

One of the main reasons riders choose leather motorcycle jackets is for the protection they offer. Leather is a durable material that can withstand abrasions and minor impacts. Many jackets also include padding or armor in key areas like the shoulders, elbows, and back to provide extra protection.

Comfort

Look for jackets with adjustable features like waist belts, cuffs, and collars. These adjustments can help ensure a snug and comfortable fit. Some jackets also have ventilation options to keep you cool during hot weather.

Pockets

Pockets are a must feature of any motorcycle jacket. They provide convenient storage for items like keys, wallets, and phones. Look for jackets with multiple pockets, both inside and out, to keep your belongings secure and easily accessible.

Style

Style is also a factor when choosing a leather motorcycle jacket. There are many styles to choose from, ranging from classic and timeless to modern and edgy. Choose a style that fits your personality and complements your overall look.

Durability

A good leather motorcycle jacket should be durable and long-lasting. High-quality leather can withstand wear and tear and will look better with age. Pay attention to the quality of the stitching and hardware as well. Well-constructed jackets will have reinforced seams and sturdy zippers.

How to Choose the Right Leather Motorcycle Jacket

Choosing the right leather motorcycle jacket can be a daunting task. Think about how you will be using the jacket. Are you a casual rider, or do you go on long trips? Do you participate in motorcycle racing, or do you need a jacket for daily commuting? Understanding your needs will help you narrow down your options and choose a jacket that suits your riding style.

Try It On

Try on the jacket and make sure it fits well and allows for comfortable movement. Pay attention to how it feels when you are in a riding position. The jacket should not be too tight or too loose, and it should provide enough coverage and protection.

Check the Features

Look for jackets with the features you need, such as padding, ventilation, and pockets. Make sure the jacket offers the level of protection you require. If you ride in different weather conditions, consider a jacket with removable liners or adjustable ventilation.

Consider the Material

Not all leather is created equal. Full-grain leather is the highest quality and most durable, but it is also the most expensive. Top-grain leather is slightly less durable but still a good option. Split-grain leather is the least durable and should be avoided for motorcycle jackets.

Look for Quality Construction

Check the stitching and hardware on the jacket. Reinforced seams and sturdy zippers are signs of a well-constructed jacket. Look for jackets from reputable brands known for their quality and durability.

Caring for Your Leather Motorcycle Jacket

Taking proper care of your leather motorcycle jacket will help it last longer and keep it looking good. Here are some tips for caring for your jacket:

Cleaning

Clean your jacket regularly to remove dirt and grime. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the surface, and avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the leather. For tougher stains, use a leather cleaner specifically designed for motorcycle jackets.

Conditioning

Leather can dry out and become brittle over time. Use a leather conditioner to keep the material supple and prevent cracking. Apply the conditioner according to the manufacturer's instructions, and avoid over-conditioning, which can cause the leather to become too soft.

Storage

Store your jacket in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid hanging it in direct sunlight, which can cause the leather to fade. Use a padded hanger to maintain the jacket's shape and prevent stretching.

Repairs

Address any damage to your jacket promptly. Small tears or loose stitching can often be repaired by a professional. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs will help extend the life of your jacket.

Leather Motorcycle Jackets For Men

Leather motorcycle jackets are a timeless and practical choice for riders. They offer protection, comfort, and style, making them a valuable addition to any rider's gear. Whether you are a casual rider or a long-distance traveler, there is a leather motorcycle jacket that will meet your needs. By considering the different types, features, and care tips, you can find the perfect jacket to accompany you on your rides.

  1. Hey Raymundo,
Whoa these leather jackets are to die for! I’m really interested in the antique washed leather jacket, been looking for that for ages but never knew what is called!

And £100 is a hell of a good price, over here in Malaysia leather jackets can cost as high as RM900, that’s about $225 which is why people usually go for synthetic. Definitely getting myself one of these, awesome article dude!

    1. Hi Riaz, thanks for coming back to my site, and for your comment – wow clothing is pretty expensive in Malaysia then! Yes I like jackets with antique washed effects – as I said in my article I don’r ride motorcycle but like bikers jackets for everyday use, I wear one to work. They’re not necessarily practical for real bikers I know, but great to own a few!

      Ray

  2. What a super, in depth look at these stylish jackets. Thank you for mentioning me and my site – but even though I’m a mad keen motorcyclist I do love to see these jackets being worn on men and women. They look great with jeans but also, and more relavant to your elegant style and followers, with dressier trousers.

I appreciate that you included the jacket with protective armour – this is something I promote for motorcycle riders.

It’s great that you’ve covered a wide price range. There’s something for everyone here.

    1. Thanks Jane! Yes the moment I saw the one with protective armour, I thought this may be the ONLY jacket that’s approved by motorcyclists! Others – as you say, they do look great with jeans, don’t they. In fact I wear “biker style jackets” all the time except the hot summer. Thanks for your comment Jane, take care!
      Ray

  3. Like you I only wear leather motorcycle jackets for their look, not to protect myself. I don’t ride bikes. Wind gusts hurt! Love the look of the racer jackets with stripes on arms. Sexy 😉

    1. Hi John, how’re you doing? Thanks for your comment. Wind gusts hurt lol. Yes this post is about leather motorcycle ‘style’ jackets. My neighbour who is a real biker (I think!) swears by his ski jacket in the winter for long distance rides. I do agree with you the ones with stripes look great.

  4. I see leather jackets as my essentials not only for riding a bike but keep away from cold, I’m not afraid of wearing a sweater underneath for extra protection. Scholt jackets seem very authentic but they are pricier but I think they’re worth buying as I see them items for life.

    1. Hi Jean Paul, thanks for your comment. As you say, Scholt jackets are for life, and I’d recommend any motorcycle jacket users to try if they haven’t already.

  5. Hey, great jackets. Especially the Schott jacket looks nice but it’s expensive. I buy my leather jackets locally. Some street markets sell decent ones for $50 or less.

  6. I love these jackets. I’m looking for one that I can wear all year round. Nice thin one that I can even wear underneath a thick coat in the winter. Thanks for the awesome list of jackets.

  7. A good leather jacket is a talisman. You might be a scrawny, awkward nincompoop, but put on the right leather jacket over a T-shirt, and you’re suddenly rough-and-tumble Indiana Jones Leather Jacket

  8. Lovely post !! I really like your styling ,all the outfits are very beautiful specially the middle one jacket .I already bought a collection of leather Jackets but nowI really want to buy this one .Thanks.
