Let's establish Gay Earth Day, and let's make it on June 22nd. Why? Because June is Pride Month, and Earth Day is April 22nd. It'll be a fabulous opportunity to raise awareness about environmental issues and LGBTQ+ rights at the same time. We are nice people. We don't tolerate discrimination. We are stronger than ever, and capable of making our planet even a better place.

Did you why Pride events usually take place in June?

Pride Month began as a way to remember the Stonewall Riots, which occurred in June 1969. The riots were a response to police raids on LGBTQ+ bars in New York City. They marked a moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and sparked today's LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Earth Day, on the other hand, began in 1970, created by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. He wanted to bring attention to the growing problems of pollution and environmental destruction. The first Earth Day was a huge success, with millions of people joining events across the United States.

Since then, Earth Day has grown into a global movement, and is now recognized in more than 190 countries. April 22nd is dedicated to protecting the environment. We take part in activities like planting trees, cleaning up trash, and learning about ways to reduce pollution. Schools, businesses, and neighborhoods come together to make a positive impact. 

Why Combine Earth Day and LGBTQ+ Pride?

So why Gay Earth Day? Why should we merge the messages of Earth Day and Pride Month?

Well, why not? It will be a day to honor both the planet and the LGBTQ+ community. This combination could help raise awareness about environmental issues within the LGBTQ+ community and promote LGBTQ+ rights within environmental movements.

Events for Gay Earth Day can include;

• Workshops (composting, gardening, etc.)
• Lectures (climate change, pollution, etc.)
• Film screenings (environmental documentaries)
• Conferences (discussions and learning)
• Clean-up (parks, beaches, rivers)
• Tree planting events (forests, air quality)
• Restoration projects (planting natives, removing invasives)

How We Can Celebrate Gay Earth Day

Many neighborhoods already have Earth Day and Pride Month activities separately. So one way is spread the word and persuade local businesses to help combine the efforts on June 22nd could create a powerful impact. 

Hosting Your Own Events

If there are no Gay Earth Day events in your area, consider hosting your own. You could organize a small gathering with your fellow queer friends and others who support you, focusing on both environmental and LGBTQ+ themes.

Ideas include a community clean-up, a recycling drive, or a nature walk. I'll be a fun way to spend time outdoors and connect with others who share your passions.

Make Gay Earth Day a Reality

Start Small

Local events can be organized with minimal resources. They can serve as a proof of concept and help build support for larger efforts in the future.

Starting with a few key activities, such as suggesting the local authority to plant trees in a particular area on June 22nd, can be a manageable way to begin.
