Birkenstock For Men Review

February 15, 2024

I have been a Birkenstock wearer for many years. They're so comfortable that I can almost say "No other sandals will do". Perfect for every summer, and I also wear them indoors all year round myself. Today I'll show you some Birkenstock for men, and later on in the post, I'd like to check out some alternatives too.

Birkenstock Sandals

Birkenstock For Men Review

Birkenstock is the inventor of the world's first-ever flexible cork-deep footbed. The brand has been around since 1774 when Johann Adam Birkenstock established his shoe business in the small Hessian village of Langen-Bergheim in Germany. But today's Birkenstock sandals style was first created by his great-great-great grandson, Karl Birkenstock in 1964, according to Wikipedia. (That's 5 generations later!) Still to this date, Birkenstock remains a family company. There are many licensed products around the world, but the original footbeds for their sandals are made with genuine raw materials, carefully selected by themselves.

You can read about their special footbed on their website (https://www.birkenstock-group.com/de/en/company/about-us) No doubt are they comfortable, as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, and they last for years even worn every single day.

Birko Flor®

Birko Flor has been developed by Birkenstock themselves as an alternative to leather, made of soft acrylic and polyamide felt fibers. It does look like leather and, I find the Birko-Flor straps perfectly comfortable on my feet. But Birkenstock also does use real leather material and suede leather with some of their products. Some suppliers don't necessarily state the strap material clearly. So if you need to know exactly what it is, you need to look out for the specification.

Birkenstock For Men

Birkenstocks are designed either for women or unisex. Women's Birkenstocks are determined by the straps that look feminine and/or with various choices of colors such as pink, purple, pastel blue, etc.

There are many different varieties but for men's Birkenstocks (i.e. unisex), there are roughly 4 different types;

1 - Classic "Arizona" type slip-on sandals

2 - "Milano" types, with extra back/ankle strap

3 - "Ramses" / "Gizeh" type flip-flops (or thongs)

4 - Clogs

Without a doubt, these are the most comfortable lounge footwear, also for casual outdoor use. My partner amazingly uses those for country walks in the summer - he can literally walk for miles with these. Whereas I don't find them suitable, as you can imagine, they could drag and put extra pressure on my ankles.

"Ramses" / "Gizeh" Flip-Flops

There is little difference between Ramses and Gizeh. Gizeh (right) has narrower straps and slightly higher heels than Ramses (left). These are good for longer walks, I find them perfect for walking on the beach, and of course for indoor use too.

Here are two types of Birkenstock clogs, Boston (left) without the back strap and Tokyo (right) with.

  • Boston (left) - definitely for lounging.
  • Tokyo (right) - is definitely the most comfortable and durable for a long walk (as well as the Milano type above).

  1. Hello,

I just recently discovered your website, and I really like it! Looks like you are a relatively new blogger, and I really support people who are trying new things in life.

I’ve read some good reviews of Birkenstock’s production before. Some of my friends have them, and I never heard any complaints. I especially like the “Milano” sandals. I’ll definitely consider buying them.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Julius, thanks for your comment. No actually I’ve been blogging on and off over 10 years! Yes Birkenstocks are very comfortable as I mentioned here. Reasonable. Try if you can!

  2. Acquired “Milano” Sandal with Arch Support since I needed a couple of shoes that would bolster my curve (I have fallen curves) and when I attempted them on, they were so agreeable!

Sadly I needed to return them as the clasp around the lower leg was rubbing up against my lower leg bone – which is no shortcoming of the shoe, it’s simply that is the way my foot is fabricated! I have returned them and have requested more Birkenstocks in an alternate style.

I was exceptionally awed with the assemble nature of the shoe and the solace and backing of the sole. They do come up somewhat greater than anticipated, furthermore more extensive than I anticipated. Indeed, even the tight shoe was marginally too wide for my foot so’s something to know about in case you’re choosing whether to arrange wide or limited shoes from them.

By and large, I would prescribe these shoes to any individual who needs a strong shoe that will bolster their feet and be agreeable to wear! The appear as though they will last a decent couple of years, so it’s incredible quality for cash.

    1. Hi Carlton, thanks for your comment, and sorry to hear about your trouble with Milano sandals. I’ve always thought personally that Birkenstock provides the most comfortable sandals with arch support, but it’s good to know that it cannot please everyone’s feet. Birkenstock sandals can last for years & years. The pair of Arizona sandals that I wear indoors is almost 10 years old. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

  3. Hi Ray,

I am well aware of Birkenstock for men as they are a very popular item in my store were I sell shoes. As You said, they are meant to, and do, last a long time. I noticed, however, that you said they can drag and add extra pressure on your ankles. How does this, if you know, speak to their ability to stop heel pain. Can they be recommended to support the impact of a foot strike, or will they make things worse for someone having Plantar Fasciitis.

    1. Hi Thabo, thanks for your comment. There are a couple of people say Birkenstock worked well with Plantar Fascilitis in this thread, but one says he/she also wore an arch band and tried for 6 months. I’m not a specialist so I can’t give an advice but it sounds like worth a try, unless your symptom is severe?

  4. Hello,

Can a guy wear Gizeh/Ramses without looking too feminine? I have a few pairs of Arizona so I want to try out different style offered by Birkenstock. Gizeh/Ramses exposes a lot more of the top of the foot. I don’t know if I am ready for that yet. I don’t have petite feet, and not the nicest looking. I do take care of my feet though. What is your opinion on this?

As for color, what is the most popular for man and go well with everything?

    Thanks.

    1. Hi Jeff, thanks for your comment. Like you, I love my Arizona, and don’t like Gizeh/Ramses as much as Arizona. But I don’t think they’re feminine as long as the colour’s black or brown? I’ve just found this image out of Google, I think they look fabulous but tattooed feet may look ugly for some!

I’d always go for black or brown, and also have a pair of white sandals looking very like Gizeh/Ramses. Blue Arizona looked great in the shop and I almost bought them…they’re sandals, not a formal footwear so I think it’s ok to experiment a little? Just like beach flip-flops for men are available in various (some crazy!) colours.

      Thanks for visiting 🙂

  5. I see Birkenstocks as essential for home use as well as sandals to walk around in the summer. you have an awesome selection listed here. I need to replace my old Birkenstocks very soon. Thanks for your advices.

    1. Hi Jean Paul, thanks for your comment. Birkenstock range is so versatile, isn’t it. I do see mine as essentials too. They last long years and comfortable. Thanks for your visit.

  6. Hey Ray awesome review. I’ve never heard of Birkenstocks. I was just looking for a good pair of leather sandals. Something to get ready for the summer. Good job Ray, thanks.

  7. Hi Ray,

What do you mean by “Gizeh (right) has narrower straps and slightly higher heel than Ramses (left)”. Aren’t they are supposed to be the same in heel? Either regular or narrow width?

I know they are advertised as unisex shoe.. but can a guy wear Gizeh without getting weird look from others?

    1. Hi Jeffrey, I remember this because My partner and I bought ourselves Ramses and Gizeh. He preferred Gizeh specifically because the heel was higher than Ramses, and I preferred Ramses for the wider strap. We no longer own them, and I can’t seem to prove the difference in height of the heels now, on looking at the Birkenstock site and some other catalogues. Sorry! I will take another good look and ask Birkenstock directly, and delete the delete the description of the heel heights should it prove to be wrong.

So as I said, my partner was wearing Gizeh and didn’t look weird at all. Birkenstock says “The Gizeh is actually less worn by men than by women, but it’s ideal for almost every foot”. I would highly recommend both pairs!

Thanks for your visit & comment Jeffrey, any more questions or comments please don’t hesitate!

  8. I don’t like having to break in when first but a pair of shoes sandals or any footwear but with Birkenstock I don’t get such a trouble which is a good thing. Also buying Birkenstock from Amazon is cheaper than anywhere else most of the time. The bad thing is it’s instantly recognizable by anyone.

    1. Hi Anson, thanks for your comment. I absolutely agree with you. With Birkenstock you don’t need to worry about breaking in. Yes the brand is recognizable but I think it’s a good thing. It’s an awesome brand! As I mentioned in my post, I own several pairs and find them most comfortable indoors and in the summer. It’s my recommendation (otherwise I wouldn’t have written about it!)

  9. I’ve never heard of Birkenstock but since you introduced me I’ve had a lot of look. Now I’m a Birkenstock convert. They really are comfortable. I don’t think I’ve ever owned more comfortable sandals in my life. So I wanna say big Thank You. Love Birkenstock 🙂

  10. Hi, fyi, for me the buy now links are causing errors of the type: uBlock Origin has prevented the following page from loading.

Thought you might like to know

    1. Hi David, thank you so much for letting me know! And sorry for the inconveniences… I’ve checked it myself and seems to be working fine, I will investigate it and resolve the issue as soon as I can today. Thank you, I appreciate it!

  11. I’ve been wearing Birkenstock Arizona for over 10 years. My most favorite pair of sandals ever. They last for a long time and the one I have now is only my 3rd purchase. I recommend Arizona.

  12. I never heard of Birkenstock until I saw my nephew swore by it recently. I am planning to buy a pair but which one do you recommend the most? Thanks for your help. Tien

    1. Hi Tien, I would recommend Arizona model, the popularity of which seems to be evergreen. I use my Arizona for indoor use only, but you can wear them for casual walks in the summer also. Very comfortable! Thanks for your visit, any more questions please don’t hesitate to get back to me 🙂

  13. I have 5 pairs of Gizeh and one pair of Mayari. The Gizeh in my opinion is the best you can buy for money! One of my Gizeh is in graceful orange color with purple soles – ok i admit they have given me some comments… but i had to own them and styled with a matching polo and neutral color shorts i think it is ok for a guy too 🙂 the Mayari i just got but has not used much yet – they have a great design but fits totally different. I can HIGHLY reccommend Gizeh for men – they also give a much better /modern / elegant look than the Milano and Arizona does.

    1. Hi Kenneth, wow, you own 5 pairs of Gizeh! I do too love my Gizeh, agree with you that they’re so comfortable, and totally understand that you have different pairs to match with polo and shorts! I must admit I’ve never owned a pair of Mayari…the cross bit across the toes felt strange to me when I tried them on, but that was just one try so I’d better get it. Thanks for sharing your experience and your recommendation of Gizeh!

  14. The Ramses is an awesome sandal. I have worn it for years. One can legitimately accuse the toe spear of having a rather homosexual appearance, albeit. It’s odd: guys snicker at them, but girls give me compliment after compliment. Ultimately, who’s to say?

    1. Hi Bruce, I think I know exactly what you mean! I love Ramses sandals too, I used to (in my younger days!) put fake tan on my feet so they would look fabulous and gay 🙂 I can’t remember any of my straight male friends making comments on them though. Compliments from girls – always promising! Thanks for your comment!

  15. I love the Gizeh but it is too narrow for my foot. Is the Ramses footbed wider, or just the straps? Since you tried them both…
    Thanks!
    Frores

    1. Hi Frores, thanks for sharing your experience. It’s been a while since I wrote this post and I no longer own Gizeh nor Ramses but remember they had almost the same width.
